Can anyone stop Alan Henderson?

The Mazda MX-5 SuperCup teams will be heading this weekend to the Croft circuit in North Yorkshire, where the penultimate championship meeting of the 2015 season will be held. The Croft track is known to always produce some of the best racing, with the very fast section from Tower Bend, through the Jim Clark Esses and onto Barcroft corner allowing the cars to really stretch their legs before the whole field is bunched right up again through one of the slowest corners in British motorsport, the extremely tight Hairpin which leads back onto the start/finish straight.

Last time out at Oulton Park it was again Alan Henderson who took pole in Qualifying and the win in both races, but the results sheets belie the fact that he was fought every lap of the way by a resurgent James Blake Baldwin. The first race weekend in a new car for James saw him right back at the sharp end, showing once again the speed that took him to the Mk1 MX-5 championship title in 2014. This weekend at Croft, Baldwin will be hoping to finally make it onto the stop step of the podium for the first time since his championship winning season last year.

Another disappointing weekend at Oulton for Henderson’s nearest championship rival, Jonathan Clements, leaves him 54 points adrift of the leader in the points standings and allows Henderson a slim opportunity to clinch the 2015 SuperCup title this weekend at Croft ahead of the final rounds. Only Henderson has maintained the consistency during the season to run right at the front of the field at every meeting, which has afforded him a commanding lead in the championship standings. However, as always the likes of Clements, Simon Goddard and Liam Murphy will be doing everything they can to beat Henderson and keep their championship challenge alive.

The battle for second place in the championship between those drivers is extremely close and with just 5 points separating them from second to fourth in the standings, it really could be any of them taking the runners up spot. Should any misfortune happen to befall Alan Henderson this weekend though and leave him coming away from Croft without a decent points haul, they could be right back in the title hunt as well.

The Croft circuit hosts the second of the SuperCup’s triple header meetings in 2015, meaning Qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday and Races 2 and 3 of the weekend on Sunday. It has been a number of years since the Mazda’s last visited the venue and this is also the first visit to the circuit for the Mk3 MX-5 cars in their current guise, so as ever in the SuperCup it will be impossible to predict the outcome of the races.
